Programme Overview

The recent development in the global market and most especially, the relevance of accounting in virtually every sphere of work has increased the demand for more Accountants. Workers in both private and public sectors who desire to enhance their productivity, performance and promotion have continuously expressed demand for part-time programme in Accounting. The Department see the need to assist the Nigerian Economy by creating additional value as demanded by the labour market in disseminating this required knowledge. Therefore, the programme designed to develop the candidates’ intellectual capabilities by imparting theoretical knowledge that will encourage self-reliance in the nation to enable the individuals to understand, exploit and change his environment.

Objectives

  • to provide basic knowledge needed for an understanding and analysis of problems of financial management of industrial, commercial, public, and other human organizations;
  • to equip the students of accounting and financial management with the skills needed for recognizing, defining problems and taking appropriate decisions, using scientific techniques and tools;
  • to inculcate in students awareness of key environmental factors and their impact on managerial/administrative practice and decisions; and
  • to develop leadership and interpersonal relation skills which are needed for working in organizations.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission into the programme should possess the Senior   Secondary School Certificate (NECO/WAEC) or General Certificate of Education at Ordinary Level with credits in five subjects including English language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two from the following: Government, Financial Accounting, Geography, Literature in English and Yoruba at not more than two sittings. Candidates for the ‘O’ Level admission must have satisfied the National cut-off mark of 180 for UTME.

Direct Entry applicants should possess five credit passes in the GCE (or equivalent) examination at least two of which shall be at the Advanced Level provided that subjects are not counted at both levels of the examination (credit passes at Ordinary level must include English Language, Economics and Mathematics). The Advanced Level passes shall include Economics or Accounting or OND at Upper Credit Level in Accounting, or Banking and Finance or ATS-ICAN final stage certificate or final stage of Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) or final stage of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).

HND in Accounting or Business/ Public Administration or Banking & Finance or Final Stage of ICAN certificate (ACA) and ACCA or CFA, ACIB, ANAN (Plus HND or B.Sc. in any discipline). Five credit passes in O/L including Mathematics, English and Economics are required.

Duration

The course of study for a Bachelor degree in Accounting programme shall run from a period of three (3) to five (5) academic years, depending on the mode of entry.
